Rascal House, a local pizza chain, recently moved its flagship location from near Cleveland State University's student center to the Union Building on Euclid Avenue. The new spot may be smaller, but the modern design offers a more relaxed, inviting atmosphere created with the student demographic in mind. "The overall vibe [is] cozier. We have a power bar with a lot of outlets for laptops," says Niko Frangos, director of concept development. "The high seating area lets people hang out, charge their cellphones, do some work and get a bite to eat."
Tommy's in Cleveland Heights proves it's easy being green. The popular spot recently won a Nature's Plate Award from the Nature Conservancy naming it the area's best green restaurant. Locals considered factors such as the use seasonal produce when voting. "It's not just about sustainability in terms of food, but sustainability for your neighborhood," says owner Tom Fello. "We've been doing it for 41 years."
Crafted Artisan Meadery's newest honey wine does more than just taste good. A portion of sales from the carbonated blackberry mead, dubbed the Pollinator ($8.99), will be donated to the Ohio State University Bee Lab, which studies colony collapse disorder. "Honey is critical to our success, but it's a much bigger issue than that," says Kent Waldeck, owner of the Mogadore company. "When we rolled this out, it seemed like a great opportunity to bring some awareness to it." To find Crafted Artisan Meadery in a store or restaurant near you, visit craftedmead.com.
