Soar over treetops at 45 mph, go backwoods horseback riding and more.
With more than 4,000 feet of cable suspended through the Mohican area, you can zip line at an average speed of 45 mph during a Tree Frog Canopy Tours adventure. “But riders can influence their own speeds,” says owner Jordan Christiansen. Try a nighttime ride, especially during a full moon. “Seeing the full moon over all those trees is the most beautiful sight in the world,” he says. “It’s the closest you can get to flying.” 21899 Wally Road, Glenmont, 740-599-2662, treefrogcanopytours.com
Visit Bear Creek Stables at Bear Creek Resort Ranch, where visitors can ride horseback on wooded trails through campgrounds and the nearby Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, which has more than 100 miles of trails. “Our main trail loop goes into the woods and pops out an hour later,” says Gina Elliott, who has run the guided tours for 15 years. “This is more like backwoods horseback riding, so there is mud and there are hills.” Tours can accommodate up to 14 people at once. “This is a great way for all sorts of people to get out and get on the trail,” she says. $30 per person, 3232 Downing St. SW, East Sparta, 330-484-3901, bearcreek.us
Forget about scaling that tree in your backyard. Try climbing a 365-year-old bur oak during a two-hour climb by EarthJoy TreeTop Canopy Adventures. After getting outfitted with harnesses, try to make your way to the top. The reward? Taking in amazing views of Hueston Woods. “You can see the lake from up there,” says owner Bill Byrne. “It’s a magical view all around you.” The climb is a bit of a challenge — more like hiking a mountain than zip-lining, says Byrne. But he predicts that you’ll love it just as much as you did as a kid. “You’re going to get winded, but you’ll be having fun so that won’t matter.” 5201 Lodge Road, College Corner, 513-664-3500, huestonwoodslodge.com
