Rating the Suburbs - Oakwood Village

Marshall Sewell, “North of 60”
singer in the doo-wop group The Edsels
That was the lead singer when we first put the group back together back in 1957. George “Wydell” Jones. One day we were practicing, and he said, “Marsh, I have a new song I want you to learn. He said the name of the song is “Rama Lama Ding Dong.” I said, “Are you kidding? I can’t even say that, let along sing it!”

We recorded that song in Cleveland in 1958. It came out and received a mild success, but it didn’t become a hit until 1961.

The city cares about its seniors. They remove snow for our senior citizens. The city provides outings to different casinos and to Amish communities. And some of the upscale restaurants have discounts for residents.

I find the people who live here very friendly and always helpful in a time of need. When there’s a time of death, the neighbors rally. They cook meals. No one suffers alone.

The real estate tax is one of the lowest in the county.

You can go just about anywhere in Oakwood and see the police patrolling around. It makes me feel safe. There’s no question this is a safe community.

If you like fishing, we have a man-made lake. Shadow Lake. It’s only a couple minutes from my house. That’s great place to go to relax.

My voice gets quite a workout, because we are singing continuously. In fact, we just came back from Long Island, N.Y.

People love the concerts, and we love playing there. It’s something we look forward to each year. It opened doors for us. Plus, we get to play with the Drifters, the Stylistics, and it’s nice to be able to share the stage with those artists.
