Color Wonder

Charming Charlie celebrates all the hues of the rainbow with its well-edited and well-priced accessories store.
Amber Matheson

The perfect walk-in closet would have it all: heels stacked in boxes with descriptions and Polaroids, scarves pooled on a well-lit shelf, accessories displayed with the knack of a Gossip Girl. And of course, everything would be color-coded.

Charming Charlie in Legacy Village is that walk-in closet on rainbow-swirled steroids. The whopping 10,000-square-foot chain store, which recently opened a second Greater Cleveland location at Crocker Park, features bags, shoes and clothing, but the accessories, especially the jewelry, are the stars.

"Everybody that comes in says, 'Oh my God, it's so overwhelming — but in such a fun way!' " says manager Angel Bauer. Riotous colors pop from every table and shine marvelously under the glittery rays of crystal chandeliers. Taste levels range from a necklace with a dangling peacock feather at $9.97 to strings of demure faux-pearls for the same price. A blue faux-croc clutch checks in at $14.97, while a draping-tassel necklace sells for $12.97. Earrings are often sold in tandem with necklaces but still manage to hit that $9.97 sweet spot. An adorable gold alligator ring is $19.97.

Shoppers will appreciate those wallet-friendly prices (jewelry hovers around the $10 mark while handbags top out at around $50). But women can't seem to help but fall in love with the store's most telling paean to the female mind: the meticulous organization.

Charming Charlie's merchandise is grouped by color. Enter from the interior sidewalks of Legacy Village, and you're greeted by the purple and pink sections; come in from the parking lot, and you'll see the animal print section alongside amber and a turquoise section that seeps into blue. Which means, says Bauer, you can come in knowing you need red earrings and dive quickly into the red section without wasting time.

Each color gets its day in the sun, and even the odd ducks find a home here: metallic, rainbow and even black with gold have their own sections.

"A lot of customers have never seen anything like this,' Bauer explains. "It's really a treasure chest."
