Reds, Whites and Brews: A Toast to Literacy

More than 300 people attended Cleveland Reads’ fifth annual “Reds, Whites and Brews: A Toast to Literacy” May 20 at Sammy’s in the Flats for an evening of wine and beer tasting. Four themed rooms featured more than 60 types of wine and handcrafted specialty beers from around the world, while guests participated in raffles and silent auctions. More than $60,000 was raised for literacy efforts in Greater Cleveland. Cleveland Magazine was a sponsor of this event.

Discovering Chimpanzees: The Remarkable World of Jane Goodall
Experience the work of Jane Goodall by way of the Cleveland Museum of National History’s 6,000-square-foot exhibit, which features a replica of the forest of Gombe National Park in Tanzania, now through Sept. 3. Interactive exhibits and programs will give visitors a sense of Goodall’s story and her global influence. This exhibit is free with a museum admission. Flying Jewels of Africa
Visitors to the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse now through Aug. 31 can witness the colorful Costa Rican butterflies that have been fluttering around since 2003 and 20 rare species of African butterflies and moths that have been added to the glasshouse. Vintage Ohio
Twenty-three of Ohio’s finest wineries will be on hand at Lake Metroparks Farmpark in Kirtland Aug. 4 and 5 from 1 to 10 p.m. for this highly acclaimed wine festival. The Cleveland Orchestra
The Cleveland Orchestra invites you to the kickoff of its summer season at Blossom Music Center with a salute to America July 1 through 4. Conductor Loras John Schissel will conduct a program of family favorites, including a salute to the Armed Forces and Tchaikovsky’s “1812” Overture. Other concerts will include “Music of John Williams & Other Hollywood Greats” July 29 and 30, “Bugs Bunny on Broadway” Aug. 12 and “The Wizard of Oz” Sept. 2 and 3. Tops KidsFest
Bring the whole family for the 15th annual Tops KidsFest in partnership with Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital July 21 through 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Tower City Amphitheater. Nature at Night
Cleveland Metroparks’ “Nature at Night” event will feature a variety of free outdoor activities July 8 from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Chagrin Nature Center and Forest Picnic Area in Mayfield Village’s North Chagrin Reservation.
