Seen and Heard

Call it a stroke of bad Loc. When '80s rap star Tone-Loc took center court during the halftime of the Cavaliers' Feb. 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers, the sellout crowd was expecting a nostalgic rendition of his 1989 smash hit "Wild Thing." Instead, they were treated to Loc's frustration as his microphone was drowned out by his backing track. Loc, who seemed to know within seconds that he was in trouble, awkwardly walked the court, giving it his best shot until the end of the song, at one point even saying, "I'm not mad at ya, Cleveland." Still, boos ensured that Loc didn't return as scheduled to sing his second '80s hit, "Funky Cold Medina," between the third and fourth quarters. "We did have some technical challenges," concedes Cavaliers spokesman Tad Carper. "Other than that, that's for the crowd to decide."

Target Market

Paper, plastic or corn? You may soon be faced with the choice if commercial use of an environmentally friendly, corn-based resin catches on. Boulder, Colo.-based Wild Oats Market is the first food retailer in North America to replace its plastic deli containers with an all- Uatural alternative called NatureWorks PLA. The chain unveiled the "Made From Corn" containers at its Woodmere store in January. Since then, the "corn-tainers" have been placed in all 77 Wild Oats stores in 24 states. The switch is a big deal for green-minded shoppers because the containers are made using 20 to 50 percent fewer fossil fuels than their traditional petroleum-based counterparts and will compost in 47 days. "People are flabbergasted when they find out it's not plastic because it feels and acts like it," says Wild Oats spokeswoman Tracy Spencer. "But there are no chemicals touching your food."
