Coventry

Cleveland Heights’ former hippie paradise has grown into a hipster hangout. The landmark vegetarian restaurant, old-school record store and indie rock concert club are just the start. Take a closer look at this inner-ring suburb’s most famous street.

Record Revolution : This Coventry landmark has downsized a bit from its heyday, but how many other independent record stores are even still open? Stop by to check out vintage vinyl, posters and Cleveland-centric T-shirts. 1832 Coventry Road, 216-321-7661

Big Fun : Growing up doesn’t have to mean leaving your childhood favorites behind. Visit the video games and action figures of your youth, and browse the deep selection of novelty gifts. 1814 Coventry Road, 216-371-4386, bigfunbigfun.com

Mac’s Backs Books on Coventry : With three floors full of classics, fiction, sci-fi, poetry and hard-to-find magazines, it’s a bibliophile’s paradise. 1820 Coventry Road. 216-321-2665, macsbacks.com

Tommy’s : Rolling Stone praised it in 1972 for serving the “Best Milkshake East of the Mississippi.” We continue to love it for its menu’s attention to vegetarians and vegans. 1824 Coventry Road, 216-321-7757, tommyscoventry.com

Passport to Peru : Home to a collection of tapestries, tie-dyes and incense. No international travel required. 1806 Coventry Road, 216-932-9783

Panini’s Bar and Grill : Sure, it’s not the Cheers bar, but it kind of feels that way. The friendly atmosphere and those famous hulking sandwiches make us want to raise our glasses over and over and over. 1825 Coventry Road, 216-321-6444, paninisgrill.com

City Buddha : Nothing is “Made in China” here. The store’s owners scour the island of Bali every year to bring back cool finds that range from deity statues to jewelry to wooden decorations that add an exotic touch to any living space. 1807 Coventry Road, 216-397-5862, citybuddha.com

American Apparel : Make Uncle Sam proud by buying hoodies, leggings, T-shirts and more — all made in California. 1782 Coventry Road, 216-320-1761, americanapparel.net

Mint Café : It’s a small Thai place with big tastes. Check out the Coventry Road Madness made with peppers, onions, mushrooms and five kinds of seafood, all simmered in a spicy basil sauce. 1791 Coventry Road, 216-320-9915, mintcafecoventry.com

Blush Boutique : Stand out in style with this shop’s vibrant inventory made by clothing and jewelry makers from throughout the United States and Canada. 1783 Coventry Road, 216-721-5319, blushcleveland.com

Grum’s Sub Shoppe : Forget Subway. This 32-year-old corner spot’s selection of hearty subs packed with signature spices slays your hunger with ease. 1776 Coventry Road, 216-321-4781

Bodega : The perfect night out deserves tasty tapas and a selection of 200 martinis. Weekends bring a side of sultry live music. 1854 Coventry Road, 216-932-3060, bodegaoncoventry.com

La Cave Du Vin : One visit to this intimately lit underground wine bar will make any grape aficionado’s list of favorites. But beer drinkers will feel at home here as well, thanks to a wide selection of microbrews. 2785 Euclid Heights Blvd. 216-932-6411, lacaveduvin.com

The Grog Shop : Check out rising indie rock acts at their underground best (translation: before they become sellouts). This 16-year-old concert club moved from the other end of Coventry several years ago, but the new space is just as intimate. 2785 Euclid Heights Blvd., 216-321-5588, grogshop.gs

City and East : Hookah, or don’t. This upscale smoking spot (yes, you can still do that indoors if you want to puff on exotic, flavored tobaccos) doubles as a bar, so you can grab a drink if you don’t care to light up. 2781 Euclid Heights Blvd., 216-321-8400
