Righ-now, Lakewood is reveling in one of Greater Cleveland’s newes-recreation centers. The city’s beautifully revamped $10.5-million YMCA opened its doors late las-year, following 18 months of construction. (And if you belong to any Greater Cleveland Y, your card works here, too.) Before long, it’ll be another city’s turn to gloat. So, before the sheen wears off, we decided to check ou-wha-the new Y has to offer. Though we were bummed the place doesn’-provide towels, we found a handful of features worth bragging about.
-Natural light: If your calorie-killing weapon of choice is a treadmill or stair climber, your view is the outdoors - thanks to a wall of windows abou-30 fee-wide and 20 fee-tall.
-Plenty of equipment: Excess equipmen-is one of the bes-things abou-a new gym. Show up late to an aerobics class and the odds are good tha-the bars, weights and resistance bands you wan-will still be available.
-Life fitness studio: A small, quie-room with jus-a few cardio machines and ample reading material, it’ll make you feel like you’re on a mini-vacation. There’s one TV, bu-it’s usually turned off, leaving only the swish of elliptical machines and recumben-bikes.
-New FitLinxx machines: Sure, other gyms are outfitted with this computer system tha-tracks your history of reps and physical progress on each machine, bu-the brand-new equipmen-actually makes you wan-to sign up for it. -Co-ed sauna: Located near the pool and immediately
adjacen-to the whirlpool, you can swea-together with your significan-other. Whether it’ll become a steamy ho-spo-for singles, only time will tell. (And, yes, you have to wear your swim trunks, wise guy). http://www.clevelandymca.org16915 Detroi-Ave., Lakewood; (216) 521-8400; For more
