Lois Moss

Founder of Walk + Roll
Age • 40s

Why she’s interesting • The former accountant co-founded and formerly co-owned Century Cycles. Committed to making Cleveland a safer place to bike, she founded Walk + Roll, which periodically closes Rockefeller Park to vehicles for a day of biking, walking and skating.

No training wheels • She didn’t start cycling until her mid-20s, while visiting a friend abroad. “I got up really early one morning and rode a bike in the English countryside and thought, This is so cool. Right after that, I came back here and got into cycling. ... There is a feeling of freedom.”

Her first bike • A blue Raleigh, purchased at Raleigh of Rocky River, a store Moss would later co-own.

She now owns • Seven bikes, including two that fold up for travel

Favorite places to bike • “I like urban riding the best, riding on city streets and exploring little alleyways. It’s amazing what you can find. My favorite places are downtown and along the lakeshore between Edgewater Park and Euclid Beach Park.”

When she’s not riding • She rows on the Cuyahoga and hopes to find more time to get back into her childhood passion — art.

Walking and rolling • An idea, a Civic Innovation Lab grant and a lot of hard work got the event rolling. “There were lots and lots and lots of meetings. More meetings than I can tell you!”

Walk + Roll III • The inaugural Walk + Roll in 2006 drew 10,000. She hopes to make it even larger this year by including more of the city. “It’s filling a need. ... We’re not closing a park, we’re using a park.”
