Localvores Log On
So long, MySpace. Goodbye, Facebook. There’s a new social network in town for those looking to eat, buy, sell and grow local food: localfoodcleveland. org, launched by Entrepreneurs for Sustainability in September. Don’t know how to buy local in the winter? Not sure what to feed your chickens? Head to the site and post your questions, create a profile, blog or chat with other members. You’ll be linked to Northeast Ohio restaurants, farms and foodies. “The site is a way to increase awareness of the benefits of the local food economy and to celebrate the region,” says Peter McDermott of Entrepreneurs for Sustainability. As of mid-October, the site boasted more than 250 members and 1,500 unique hits. Next up for the site: a how-to section to help members troubleshoot sustainable food ideas.

Multiplying Effects
It’s the Cleveland Independents Restaurant Week times two. Diners now have double the chances for special dinner offers at more than 50 restaurants. From Nov. 2 to 7 and Nov. 9 to 14, participating restaurants will offer a three-course prix fixe dinner for about $30, and some will offer prix fixe lunches as well.
Super Chef
The Browns might not make it to the Super Bowl this year, but Blue Canyon co-owner and chef Brandt Evans is preparing for next year. Evans (and his braised beef short ribs with Ohio corn and smoked tomato spoonbread) was voted the 2010 Hall of Fame representative by attendees at the annual Taste of the NFL. Along with the task of preparing an Ohio-inspired dish for 5,000 at a preview party in Miami the night before Super Bowl XLIV, Evans will receive two tickets to the game and will be featured in two cookbooks. “I’m just hoping I meet the Browns down there,” he says.

Tasty Read
Congrats to Cleveland Magazine food writer Laura Taxel, whose September 2007 article “Welcome to Dante’s Inferno” appears in Best Food Writing 2008. Taxel and chef Dante Boccuzzi will sign copies of the book at Dante in Valley View on Nov. 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A special dinner menu will be available.

Open Up
Good news for fans of the shuttered Herb’s on the Lake: The Avon Lake restaurant is scheduled to reopen before the end of the year as Savannah’s Lake Road Pub and Grill, a joint venture between Savannah’s Bar and Grille owner Jim DePaul and Chris Haas, president of All Pro Freight Systems. It will be located at 32485 Lake Road, Avon Lake.
