A few rock shows you really shouldn't miss this month
Elvis Birthday Tribute
Jan. 6 | State Theatre
Elvis Presley would be 78 years old this month, and there may be no artist who has more tribute acts tied to his name. This touring show doesn't aim to channel just the Vegas Elvis or the teen idol version. Three singers present The King throughout his career. Elvis' drummer, D.J. Fontana, is part of the lineup, too. $10-$45, 7 p.m., playhousesquare.org
Father John Misty
Jan. 11 | Beachland Ballroom
Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman has remade himself as Father John Misty — a folk-rock hybrid touring behind his infectious debut, Fear Fun. San Francisco Weekly called his frontman persona a "cross between Elvis and an SNL parody of some female lounge singer on her fourth glass of wine." $15, 8:30 p.m. beachlandballroom.com
17th Annual Tri-C High School Rock Off
Jan. 11-27 | House of Blues
With six nights of performances, you have several chances to take in the semifinal rounds of this Cleveland tradition. A total of 72 bands will take the House of Blues stage to battle for bragging rights, with the three bands that make it through each night moving on to the "final exam" Feb. 9. $10, check website for show times, hob.com/cleveland
