Best Doctors 2010: Predicting fatal heart rhythms

Dangerous rhythms in the heart can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. Traditionally, “we put defibrillators in just about anybody that has a weak heart,” says Dr. Otto Costantini, MetroHealth’s director of cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmia prevention. But for many, “it’s like having an insurance policy that you never use,” he says. To better determine patients who will, Costantini has begun using a new test that uses computerized algorithms to detect subtle changes in heartbeats.
