Fish Fries - Our Lady of Guadalupe

AM
Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Roman Catholic Church by trade, but the vibe is bright, modern and light on the Catholic overtones. As a Methodist, I appreciate the casual feel. The priest greets us himself, and one of the many kids running around seats us (on our way out, the cashier is also a young volunteer). But I’m here for the salmon, not the social scene. I’ve heard this church offers a first-rate salmon special, and I’m here to investigate if it lives up to the hype.

The menu celebrates the dinner as its marquee event, boxing it and splashing “Favorite” across the side. And it doesn’t disappoint. The fish arrives perfectly cooked, pink and tender but not at all mushy, with a decent side of rice and green beans. Our server thinks the kitchen is out of rice and offers a baked sweet potato in its stead, but when a giggly young girl brings my plate out, she says they found a little extra rice. Thankfully, I still get the sweet potato, which is split open and filled with butter and caramelized brown sugar and is better than dessert. The delicate, lightly battered homemade onion rings also deserve a nod.

A full salmon dinner with two sides, punch, a roll and butter clocks in at $9, and the fish was better than a $20 meal I ate in Hawaii. After weeks of battered and fried fish, it makes Friday sophisticated again (but don’t worry — they’ve still got all the fried fish, shrimp and sides you could ask for. And we did). 9080 Shepard Road, Macedonia, (330) 468-2194; olg.cc; Fridays during lent, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., $9
