A sign on the Linden Tavern door asks if you’re tired of all those sissy wine bars. If not, this might be the time to scurry to the safety of a martini lounge. If you’re ready to leave your briefcase behind, then step inside.
The place is deceiving — you might walk by the entrance if you don’t know it’s there. That’d be a mistake: Within these bumper sticker-lined walls is a fish fry that entices diners all year — especially during Lent.
The biggest draw is lightly breaded, fresh, Lake Erie yellow perch with french fries and coleslaw served as a Friday special. Swap the fries for homemade potato-and-cheese pierogi for an additional charge.
Additional Lenten options include walleye, whitefish, scrod and a handful of seafood specials.
Don’t expect to walk in on Fridays during Lent and get a seat — call two hours ahead to reserve one of 52 table or 22 bar seats. On these nights, the staff typically serves more than 300 perch dinners.
Or take your chances and try to make friends. The friendly clientele is known to invite waiting customers to join their tables. That attitude keeps people coming back.
