You don’t need a license to get behind the wheel at theSpirit of Clay. Many ceramics studios offer already-fired ware for crafty customers to paint, but this art studio takes pottery one step further — or rather, one step back — allowing children and adults to use an electric pottery wheel to shape their own pieces from a lump of clay. Owners Kathy Hess and Kelly Strah decided to turn their passion for art into a profession when the factory where they worked downsized five years ago. “It’s nice to get your hands into something and build from scratch,” says Hess. “Through making something, you learn about yourself.” As long as you’re over the age of 5, you can give it a spin. 828 SOM Center Road, Mayfield Village; (440) 684-0001; spiritofclay.net
