North/South Broadway

Where East Meets West
Karin Connelly
The North and South Broadway neighborhoods are rich in cultural heritage and tradition. Polish and other Eastern European families who infused a sense of community and work ethic into the neighborhood originally founded the area. Those traditions continue to this day, although the Broadway area is much more diversified.

“Today there’s more diversity of jobs and population. We’re a neighborhood of folks who like to get together.” says Marie Kittredge, executive director of Slavic Village Development.
Neighborhood Gem

The anchor of the North Broadway and South Broadway neighborhoods is Slavic Village. The village blends history and tradition with a modern sense of community involvement. “There’s a lot of historical influence,” says Kittredge. Its residents have preserved affordable housing that was built in the late 1800s while also creating recreational, cultural and civic organizations that keep the community foundation strong.

Polish delis coexist with artists’ lofts. The Morgana Run Trail follows the old Wheeling & Lake Erie rail line throughout Slavic Village, connecting to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park towpath.

“We have a lot of amenities in this neighborhood,” says Kittredge. “Our neighborhood vision is for an active, healthy neighborhood.”
