Detroit Shoreway

The Play's the Thing
Karen Fuller
Detroit Shoreway is a lakefront neighborhood with an exciting mix of traditional and contemporary residential opportunities. It offers residents quick, easy access to downtown and the opportunity to walk to Edgewater Park. Home to Cleveland Public Theater and EcoVillage, the neighborhood boasts an emerging arts and theater district.

Neighborhood Gem

Cleveland Public Theater has been serving the city for 24 years.

The theater was founded by James Levin, its productions modeled after off- off- off-Broadway — groundbreaking, adventurous work for younger audiences. It is professional theater, and the performers are paid, auditioning members of the company.

“We focus on work that is very homegrown,” says Raymond Bobgan, the theater’s executive artistic director. “We’re committed to developing original work created by Cleveland artists, playwrights and dancers.” In fact, many of Cleveland’s premier playwrights had their first works presented at Cleveland Public Theater.

During the season (September through June), productions are plentiful, with both theaters running about 70 percent of the time. The theater also provides after-school and community-education programs to the underserved population to get them involved in theater.
