Lancer Reopens
After a devastating fire late last year, the Lancer Steakhouse has reopened across the street from its original Carnegie Avenue location. It’s a little smaller, concedes owner George Dixon IV, but the menu is exactly the same. When asked if this is the Lancer’s new permanent location, Dixon is quick to respond. “This is definitely a temporary location. We are definitely rebuilding at the old site. But we’ll be here at least a year.”

Much A-brewing
Bier Markt owner Sam McNulty has one more bar trick up his sleeve. If all goes right, before the end of summer McNulty will open a 3,000-square-foot brewery/restaurant/outdoor beer garden on West 25th Street called Market Garden Brewery. He plans to renovate and connect two buildings next to the West Side Market for the project. Heading the brewing process is Andy Tveekrem, former brewer at Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware, Md., and Great Lakes Brewing Co. before that. He and McNulty are collaborating on a list featuring 24 beers on tap. “We’re going to run the whole range: a couple of wheat beers to an easy-drinking, old-school American lager up to some IPAs, ambers and Belgian browns,” says McNulty. As for the menu, McNulty says to imagine what you’d eat at a Labor Day picnic: pulled pork, hot dogs, sausages, beer pretzels and maybe a Philly cheesesteak as well. “The idea is to create this sort of beer town here on West 25th Street with Great Lakes, Bier Markt and all the other bars contributing in the district,” McNulty says.

By the Numbers
For Menu 6, which opened last month, an identity crisis is a good thing. As owner Said Ouaddaadaa and chef Michael Herschman reinvented the former Boulevard Blue, they came up with an idea that wouldn’t pigeonhole the restaurant. “We didn’t want to get stuck being a steakhouse or Italian. ... We decided it would be fun [to name the restaurant] off of a number,” says Herschman, who previously owned Mojo in Tremont. Each of the restaurant’s menus — from food to wine to dessert — is divided into six categories. The food falls under either “raw,” “hot/cold/small,” “green,” “water and feathers,” “land” or “side, etc.” The menu is market-driven, and Herschman says it will constantly change. “This is food-forward dining,” he says. “This is not comfort food.”

Discount Savvy
Add one more discount deal Web site to the list:’s a site that sends subscribers three e-mail notices a week with certificates to purchase at a discount price. The deals won’t always be restaurants, says marketing director Stacy Bogart-Bohrer, but if there is a specific place you’re looking for, just ask. Look for Lucky’s Cafe and Vine and Bean Cafe to offer deals in March, a result of feedback on Facebook. As an added bonus, $1 from every purchase will go directly to a Cleveland charity. The month’s proceeds will benefit The Gathering Place.
