The Stockyards neighborhood is a community rich in history. Once home to the seventh-largest meatpacking district in the country and renowned breweries, today the neighborhood is a patchwork quilt of multigenerational residents and newcomers.
The Stockyards prides itself on its diversity and heritage. Many residents are second- and third-generation neighbors, while the newer population of Hispanic and Asian residents contribute to the community’s diversity. Worker housing from the manufacturing era co-exists with newer housing, and residential development continues to grow.
Neighborhood Gem
The Stockyards residents take pride in their community involvement and welcome the opportunity to bring folks together for socializing and entertainment. For example, residents get together for a monthly night of music and dancing at Sachsenheim Hall.
“Hearty Metzenseifen German and Austro-Hungarian immigrants, who either worked the land or for the railways, settled in the area,” says Alex Brazynetz, executive director of the Stockyard Redevelopment Organization. “Sachsenheim Hall, located on Denison Avenue east of Ridge Road, stands as testament to this heritage, and is currently hosting events from Salsa Nights to rock concerts.”
Furthermore, the Stockyard Stampede, a 5K run and 1-mile walk, has become an annual event in the neighborhood.
