I’m a little disappointed that Cleveland’s sister lighthouses didn’t make the cut for your “Iconic Cleveland” feature (August 2009). Still, your “Illuminating Investment” story in that same issue called attention to the fact that our lighthouses may or may not survive to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2011. However, some of the details were inaccurate. The East Pierhead lighthouse is the only one that has ever been on the East Breakwater. In addition, the current work on the West Pierhead involves the pierhead underpinnings, not the lighthouse itself.

Sounds Like Home
As former Clevelanders, my husband and I moved to Orlando 10 years ago. Until recently, we did not realize how much we have missed the Cleveland Orchestra. In July, we returned for a regular visit with four of our seven children and 10 of our 20 grandchildren. On July 19, we enjoyed a picture-perfect picnic at Blossom Music Center with friends before the superb Beethoven’s Fifth concert by conductor Franz Welser-Möst. What a wonderful experience! Bottom line: We are happy living in Central Florida because we don’t have to shovel sunshine. Granted, most people do not realize that there is more in Orlando than theme parks, but where we now live lacks talented musical culture. Ohioans are fortunate to have such a world-renowned orchestra in their backyards.

Paul Gauguin: You haven’t heard this much about the French postimpressionist painter since your college art history class. We preview the Cleveland Museum’s of Art’s Paul Gauguin: Paris, 1889 and delve into the museum’s art-themed book club, which will be covering Gauguin’s Tahitian journal, Noa Noa, this fall.
Bathrooms: We find where you can scrawl on a bathroom wall guilt-free and without bringing your own Sharpie and — in a slightly tamer vein — offer advice for giving your home’s powder room a holiday makeover (page 134).
