News Bites

Power Couple
Look for Ohio City favorite Jonathan Sawyer (up-and-coming chef at Bar Cento) playing sidekick to his pal and mentor, Michael Symon, on Dinner Impossible this fall when Symon takes over the reins on the Food Network show. Before opening Bar Cento, Sawyer boosted his career with stints at Symon’s Lolita and Perea. “Michael and I are still better friends than ever before,” says Sawyer. “He asked me to do it, and I couldn’t turn the opportunity down.” Beyond that, Sawyer was mum, saying only that he’s working on four episodes, and that a confidentiality agreement prohibits him from spilling any kind of beans.

An Empire Begins
Heather Haviland’s fans are keeping the Tremont-based chef busy. The faithful line up weekly for her brunch menu at Lucky’s Café, but for East Siders it can be a chore to hoof it over to the West Side neighborhood. Luckily for them, the owner of the Café Limbo space contacted Haviland about bringing her magic touch to Larchmere. Haviland agreed this past spring, and before she knew it she was opening a restaurant. “It’s really, really light fare,” she says of the menu at Vine & Bean, noting that because of the very minimal kitchen “[the food] will be prepared at Lucky’s and brought over.” Look for live music, wine and beer on the patio this summer. Tremonsters don’t have to worry about a defection, though. Haviland’s baby is Sanctuary, set to open in the Tremont Lofts this fall. The rustic European café and bistro will have a “heavy emphasis on bread — slow-fermented bread. Some of it will take seven days from start to finish,” she says. “It’s gonna be awesome.”

Dame On
Esteemed chef Bev Shaffer, the author of Brownies to Die For and cooking instructor at Mustard Seed Market, will have one of her dessert recipes published in Cooking with Les Dames D’Escoffier, which debuts this October. The cookbook features recipes from seminal members of the women-only chef organization, including Julia Child and Alice Waters. “As a founding member of the NEO chapter of Les Dames,” Shaffer tells us via e-mail, “I was inspired to join after having a conversation regarding the organization with Julia Child.”
