Bier Markt owner Sam McNulty is opening Bar Cento this month in Ohio City adjacent to his popular watering hole. Chef Jonathon Sawyer, who has worked with Michael Symon at Lolita and New York City’s Parea, plans a mostly Roman menu with some Belgian pub food offerings. “We will be focusing on local and organic ingredients and a lot of seasonal ingredients from the West Side Market, across the street,” says owner McNulty. Expect pommes frites and Belgian beer-steamed mussels as part of the long-anticipated Belgian fare. From the Italian portion, look for a fifth-generation family recipe of baked ziti with sage, pancetta, chestnuts and a locally farmed ricotta. Bar Cento will offer more than 100 wines (cento is Italian for 100) and will carry a selection of beers from the Markt. It will also seat roughly 100 people, including the shared areas of the Bier Markt lobby and patio. The haute rustic décor will offer a relaxed atmosphere — making Bar Cento a fine-dining destination, McNulty says.

October is Pick Apples month for the Cleveland Independents restaurants. All 70-plus member establishments plan special apple-inspired menu items throughout the month from appetizers to desserts and everything in between. Fruits for the effort will be supplied by Northeast Ohio’s Woolf Farms and will be available for restaurant pickup at the Shaker Square and Crocker Park locations of the North Union Farmers’ Market.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History has unveiled its Blue Planet Cafe, an environmentally friendly eatery that’s also kid-friendly, diet-friendly and just-stopping-in-for-lunch-friendly. The new University Circle spot offers fresh salads, sandwiches, homemade soups and healthy entrees such as salmon or tofu kebabs as well as simpler snack food for younger palates. Museum admission is not required.

The dining space at The Cleveland Play House, formerly the members-only Play House Club, has been transformed by Gary Lucarelli and the Sweetwater Group, proprietors of Café Sausalito, Players on Madison and Star at Playhouse Square. The rechristened Stages seats 180 in a warm, contemporary atmosphere. “This is truly a partnership between a nonprofit theater and a public restaurant group,” Lucarelli says. “We’re in it together.” The menu, which Lucarelli describes as American bistro cuisine, will also incorporate food and drink specials based on the shows running at the Play House. When “Man of la Mancha” opened in September, the restaurant offered Spanish dishes and hosted a Latin jazz group, which performed on the restaurant’s stage. The restaurant is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday and offers live entertainment on weekends. (216) 795-1111
