Historically, the Hough neighborhood was home to Cleveland’s elite, including the Severance and Bolton families. Today Hough is known for its economic and cultural diversity, as well as its reputation for a community that has propelled its own renaissance.
“The neighborhood is special because special people live there,” says Cleveland City Councilwoman Fannie Lewis. “The good Lord has smiled upon it.”
Neighborhood Gem
The Hough neighborhood is home to the first CiTiRAMA—an endeavor sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Greater Cleveland to promote new-home construction in the city’s neighborhoods.
Eighteen new houses were built on Linwood Avenue between East 55th and East 66th streets in 2003. “It helped beautify the street,” Lewis says.
The project sparked a wave of community pride and renovation. While new houses went up, residents in older houses painted and repaired their properties. “It’s a very conscientious group of young people,” says Lewis. “I’m just so proud of them.” Every new home sold after the event.
“It’s a very harmonious street and we were very pleased to be a part of it,” she says. “It shows what can be done when a bunch of minds come together.”
