Culinary Kids

If you visit the Countryside Farmers Market at Howe Meadow on a summer Saturday, you may spot a herd of children checking out piles of new potatoes and patty pan squash. They’re part of the market’s Junior Chefs Program for kids ages 7 to 12. It’s a three-hour hands-on class that gives youngsters a taste of what it means to eat healthy, locally raised food. Each $40 session is led by a volunteer culinary pro. Last summer, chef Jonathon Sawyer (below) of the Greenhouse Tavern shepherded 16 kids as they shopped, chopped and stirred. (He plans to do it again this season.) “We started with a walk through the farmers market to buy ingredients,” Sawyer says. “And then went to the kitchen at Old Trail School, made four different dishes and ate them together.
