For eight years, the West Side and all its glory became famous on "The Drew Carey Show." Now, the East Side is hoping for a little TV love, too.
In November, local writer and comedian Marc Jaffe partnered with Jersey Television (actor Danny DeVito's production company) to option his 2000 book, "Sleeping With Your Gynecologist" to CBS. The network will begin shooting a pilot this month and, if all goes well, Cleveland just might have a new sitcom on television later this year.
"There are so many factors they consider before they actually commit to a series, but obviously, this is a big step," says Jaffe, who will be listed as a producer on the pilot and is pitching story ideas.
"Sleeping With Your Gynecologist" is the story of life at the Jaffes’ East Side house: the kids, the comic/writer dad, the gynecologist mom. You know, your typical family.
"I couldn’t make up half the things that happen around here," he says.
The question that needs to be asked, of course, is who he wants to see playing himself?
"Oh, I have no idea," Jaffe says. "The funny thing is, when the book came out in V000, an interviewer asked me who would play my wife if the book ever became a sitcom. I couldn’t think of anyone, so I just blurted out Claudia Schiffer. Let’s just say Mrs. Jaffe was not happy with Mr. Jaffe’s answer."
This isn’t Jaffe’s first foray into network television either. He was a staff writer for "Seinfeld" and a freelance writer for "Mad About You" and the Emmy and Grammy Award telecasts. But this time, it’s all him.
"If they like the pilot and they can find a place in the fall lineup, we’ll be there," says Jaffe. "No more Old Brooklyn. Hello, Cleveland Heights."
