Lee-Miles

Family Ties
Karin Connelly
The Lee-Miles neighborhood brings a mix of residential, commercial and retail pockets to a suburban-like community within the Cleveland city limits. The neighborhood was developed in the 1940s and 1950s, at the same time the eastern suburbs were evolving.

The community boasts two parks—Fredrick Douglass Park and Kerruish Park—which feature a swimming pool and playing fields. The Lee-Harvard Shopping Plaza is Cleveland’s largest shopping center with 30 tenants.

Neighborhood Gem

With its suburban setting, the Lee-Miles neighborhood boasts the highest homeownership rate in the city. “Ninety percent of our housing is single-family homes,” says Ward 1 Councilwoman Nina Turner. “Families bring stability to a neighborhood. The quality of life people look for in a community is certainly linked to stable families.”

One of the factors that draw families to the Lee-Miles neighborhood is the quality of the housing available. The homes are relatively new for a Cleveland neighborhood. “The housing stock was built after Word War II, so [builders could] take advantage of the technologies available,” says Turner. “Most of the residents here have a commitment to the neighborhood, to the community.”
