And Another Thing

Following performances this year in Australia, Japan and Europe, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys' ("The Music Issue," April 2004) returned home to pay tribute to their vulcanized stomping grounds with a new full-length disc titled "Rubber Factory," released Sept. 7. Comedian David Cross ("Mr. Show," "Arrested Development") directed the video for the album's first single, "10 A.M. Automatic," after the Akron blues-rock duo ran into him during a tour stop in Seattle. Sticking to their roots, the Keys' also enlisted the help of Akron rock vet Harvey Gold of Tin Huey to produce the video, which was filmed by his Gold Teleproductions at New York City’s Chelsea Television Studio in mid-July.

Working from the theory that shampoo and pop music are a natural pairing, Pantene launched a nationwide search for a new female voice that ended with 17-year-old Bay Village singer-songwriter Kate Voegele ("Local Sounds," February 2004) vying for the chance to share a stage with pop artists Ashanti and Fefe Dobson in New York City Aug. 5. Voegele and two other finalists were selected from more than 1,200 entrants to appear in television commercials promoting their music. And while Voegele didn't win the online vote, she's riding the wave of good press with plans to get back into the studio to record new tunes and shop her material to labels this fall.
