A Whole New 'U'

The University of Akron

Take another look at the new University of Akron.

Its beautiful, vibrant campus has been reinvigorated by the New Landscape for Learning initiative. In just five years, the university has added nine new buildings, made 14 major renovations and created 30 acres of new green space.

Take a look at the new Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Student Union, and Simmons Hall, a one-stop shop that meets all of our students’ administrative needs. Classroom buildings are fitted with state-of-the-art educational technology, and the new Honors Complex is both a residence hall and an academic facility.

But the university is not done yet. The school recently completed a 70,000-square-foot addition to Guzzetta Hall that includes a 450-seat theater with a full stage and fly space, seven dance studios and dressing rooms. The school’s 15th residence hall will open in fall 2007, as will a new Medina County University Center. In association with its partners in the University Park Alliance, the university is helping to revitalize a 40-block, 700-acre area around campus.

As the physical environment changes, the school’s academic reputation is being polished as well. Founded in 1870, it is the state’s only public university with a science and engineering program ranked in the top five nationally by U.S. News & World Report.

The university recently received additional recognition for the excellence of its programs and technology, including a ranking among Princeton Review’s 2006 Best Midwestern Colleges and the business school being among the Review’s Best 237 Business Schools.

Intel Corp. ranked Akron third in the nation for most wireless access in 2005. Careers & Colleges magazine called UA one of 14 “Schools that Rule” in 2004, citing “cutting-edge curriculum” as well as reasonable tuition and location.

National Jurist named UA’s School of Law its best value public law school in America in 2003, while Pre-Law Insider magazine ranked it second for value in 2004.

UA students are busy creating rankings of their own. The Zips had a great year in collegiate Division I athletics in 2005-06, winning five Mid-American Conference championships — in football, men’s soccer, women’s cross country, and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. The Zips also played in their first Division I-A bowl game in December 2005.

Meanwhile, UA engineering students continue to dominate Ohio teams in Society of Automotive Engineering competitions, as they have for more than 15 years. In 2005, a University of Akron team came in second in the nation in the first year of the Challenge X competition to design an SUV that offers better fuel efficiency, less pollution and more performance.

The students and faculty of The University of Akron have earned national recognition in polymer science, global business, dance, psychology, marketing, nursing, intellectual property law and other fields.

The university’s 10 colleges offer more than 280 associate, bachelor, master, doctoral and law programs. Approximately 23,000 students study at the main campus in Akron, Wayne College branch in Orrville and sites throughout Medina and Summit counties.

Each environment allows students to acquire the skills, knowledge and disposition needed to be successful in the classroom and the workplace.

Adults can attend weekend programs, evening classes and a wide selection of workshops, courses and services designed to meet the goals and needs of nontraditional students.
