Zen Out

Doris Larson, The Foxburg Inn
The Drive: Foxburg, Pennsylvania
Miles: 131
Beautiful Music: In September and October, Foxburg’s Lincoln Hall draws a crowd for classical, bluegrass and Wurlitzer performances.
It’s all about the river at The Foxburg Inn, in Foxburg, Pa. Step to the window in any of the 24 guest rooms and you’ll encounter stunning views of the calm, placid Allegheny. The understated décor, with duvets in autumn tones, oak and cherry headboards and simple wrought iron lamps, allows the view to be the focus. Settle in for the weekend in a room with plush king beds with triple sheeting and flatscreen televisions, or spring for a corner suite with views in two directions, a hot tub and fireplace with sitting area.

A short walk past beautifully terraced gardens takes you to the timber-framed Allegheny Grille on the bank of the river. Take a table in the glass-fronted dining room or settle on the patio for a magnificent look at the changing scene: a lone kayaker passing by, the reflection of brilliant fall foliage. The restaurant is owned by the same people who introduced Gamekeeper’s to our area, and it shows in the quality of the food. Tuck into macaroni and cheese with chorizo sausage, or sample pan-roasted Chilean sea bass. The PEI mussels on the Temptations menu are another popular choice.

What to do in this borough, population 268? There are surprises aplenty lined up on Main Street across from the inn: The Red Brick (a shop showcasing regional artists), Foxburg Wine Cellars and, on the second floor of The Foxburg Free Library, the recently renovated Lincoln Hall. It’s a superb performance venue with a Mighty Wurlitzer theater organ at the back and a tiger mahogany Steinway onstage. Catch a final image of the Allegheny on the hand-painted stage curtain (circa 1910). (724) 659-3116, www.visitfoxburg.com
