Greenisland Restaurant

Ashley Harrington
Welcome to Greenisland, where the servers call you “Love,” the beers keep a pourin’ and St. Patty’s Day is every day. This family-friendly restaurant is a step above area chains. Its Irish homestead atmosphere provides a relaxing place where Friday nights become an enjoyable event for both families and friends.

Our dinner began with the Greenisland crab cakes ($7.99). These lightly breaded, fall-apart-in-your-mouth delights were topped off with a creamy white Cajun sauce. However, since only two small cakes are served, you’ll need a second starter if you’re feeding a crowd.
For dinner, I tried the traditional fish-and-chips combo ($11.99). Unlike some other Friday fish fries, this beer-battered cod was not overly breaded, creating a tasty, tender fish. Hearty steak fries rounded out the plate, along with a side of fresh coleslaw.

My guest ordered the shepherd’s pie ($10.99) with skepticism, as his mother’s tasty recipe is one of his favorites. His meal was given the stamp of approval, with its home-style taste, tender beef, gravy and tangy hint of vinegar. He especially enjoyed the generous amount of melted cheese atop the mashed potatoes — a tip that even mom could use.

The serving staff was second to none. Our food came at a reasonable time, our coffee cups were always filled and our waitress had our check prepared before we could say please. And the best part? The owner takes pride in his customers, greeting each and every one. If you’re lucky, he may just tell you tales of his days back in Ireland.
