The mission of the Ronald McDonald House® of Cleveland, Inc. (RMH) is to support families whose children are receiving treatment at area medical centers by providing a homelike environment and essential resources and services.
The House is a temporary home away from home for families with children who have illnesses, injuries or birth defects. It provides families with more than just a comfortable bed and hot meal —they find support, compassion and understanding. RMH gives parents a safe, comfortable and inexpensive place to rest, eat and do laundry; a library; play areas where healthy siblings and outpatient children can lead as normal a life as possible; and a shuttle to and from the hospitals, among other services and amenities.
Since 1979, Cleveland’s RMH has served more than 29,000 families from Ohio and around the world. Parents, siblings, grandparents and often the patients themselves stay at the House for an average of eight nights, although many families stay for weeks or months. More than 100 volunteers assist the RMH staff to operate the 37-room house, which accommodates more than 1,400 families each year.
As more medical procedures are done on an outpatient basis, RMH has adapted to serve patients as well as their families. Children struggling with illnesses and injury learn that RMH provides a secure environment away from the hospital where they can meet friends who face similar challenges.
Families are asked to pay $20 a night to stay at the House, although it actually costs more than $75 per night to house a family. For about one-third of the families who stay at RMH the fee is reduced, and for one-fifth of the families it’s waived altogether. No family has ever been, or will ever be, turned away for financial reasons. As a result of the gap, there always is a need for outside financial support.
RMH relies on outside contributions to cover operating expenses. It also benefits from donations of food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies and phone cards.
RMH is located at 10415 Euclid Ave., Cleveland; for more information, call (216) 229-5757 or go to www.clevelandrmh.org
