After nearly a year of postponements, the reopening of Lola has finally arrived. Thinking about reservations? Call (216) 621-LOLA to book a table, and jump at whatever’s available. And while Lola may be the crown jewel in the East Fourth Street neighborhood, it’s hardly the only gem. MRN Ltd., which owns most of the real estate on the increasingly hip alleyway, has announced plans for spring openings of at least three more restaurants there. La Strada – A World CafÃ© will feature Mediterranean street food, including Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Grecian and Spanish dishes. Zocalo Cantina will specialize in pan-Mexican fare, and Teresa’s Pizza will resurrect the pizzas and pastas beloved by Clevelanders since 1969 into a bistro setting.
Melt, a “bar and grilled” specializing in more than 20 types of grilled cheese sandwiches along with 100 bottles of beer on the wall, has opened on Detroit Avenue in Lakewood. Owner Matt Fish, formerly a chef at Johnny Mango, says the eatery is open for lunch and dinner daily, as well as an all-day Sunday brunch.
Pamela Waterman and Brad Schmid, former executive chefs of Lockkeepers and Park City Diner, respectively, have opened Duet, a gourmet prepared food store in Rocky River. Duet, which Waterman says is unique on the West Side, provides full-service catering for up to 200 people, but also features a tantalizing array of freshly made foods and gourmet groceries to grab and go. Offerings include pot roast, lasagna, grilled salmon, short ribs, potato casserole and salads. Duet is open Tues-Sat, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. at 2252 Wooster Road, Rocky River, (440) 333-2220.
Fans of North Olmstead‘s Wild Mango may have been alarmed to see the restaurant closed. Don't fear, says chef-owner Jia Wei, it’s merely relocating to a different spot beside Great Northern Mall. Wei says guests can expect an expanded menu, as well as the addition of a traditional Korean granite barbecue designed by Wei himself. Those missing Wei’s cuisine in the meantime can still visit his other location, Weia Teia in Oberlin.
Chef Roland Mesnier, former pastry chef for the White House, will host a class on chocolate and candy decorations at The Viking Store in Legacy Village on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. Spaces are filling up quickly; call (216) 381-2100. Mesnier was hired by Rosalynn Carter in 1977 and remained the sole pastry chef for the White House for 25 years, dazzling first families and foreign dignitaries alike with his confectionery skills until retiring in 2004.
