An integral part of the Cleveland Rockers’ run to the Eastern Conference WNBA title in 1998, Suzie McConnell-Serio has remained close to the game of basketball since her playing days ended.

Before taking her current position as head coach of Duquesne University’s women’s basketball team, McConnell-Serio, 43, spent 2003 and 2004 as head coach of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. She was named Coach of the Year in ’04, an accomplishment that mirrored the impact she had on the league as a player.

During her three seasons with the Rockers, she played and started in 78 games and averaged 6.7 points and 4.8 assists per game.

She accumulated a slew of honors as a player, including Newcomer of the Year, All-WNBA First Team and the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award, twice. In 2007, Sports Illustrated named her the best 5-foot-4-inch basketball player, female or male, in history.

“It was so special being part of the WNBA and, for me, being only two hours from home,” says McConnell-Serio, a Pittsburgh native. “The fans were incredible. It was an amazing experience.”

In two seasons at Duquesne, McConnell-Serio has thus far amassed a 35-27 record, collecting 20 wins during the 2008-2009 season.

“Last year was our most successful season; it was our first ever trip to the WNIT,” she says. “We’re hoping to build on that success.”
