The village made headlines in March by banning smoking on its ball fields. But the real news is that this community of more than 3,000 has managed to retain its leafy appeal in spite of its proximity to Interstate 271. A quarter of the village is in Cleveland Metroparks’ North Chagrin Reservation, and 17 acres have just been preserved for woodland habitat along Wilson Mills Road. The village is constructing more than five miles of all-purpose trails for part of the Greenway Corridor project, which also includes the ongoing construction of upscale cluster homes that will connect Center School Elementary with the village swimming pool, and Progressive Insurance’s plans for a third campus. Mayfield Village was last year’s safest community, but a double domestic homicide weighed heavily in this year’s safety rankings. Still, the village retains a cozy quality and has placed either second or third in our rankings since 2003. Once people move in, they hardly ever leave — only 33 homes were sold last year — which keeps the median home sale value high.
