Cuyahoga County eyes long-term fix for justice center.

Development | By Ken Prendergast, NEOTrans

Cuyahoga County officials announced last week that they have reached a tentative agreement on a path forward for capital improvements to county courthouse facilities in Downtown Cleveland.

Tax Dollars: Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne said the county will invest $150 million over the next six years to repair and modernize the Justice Center.

  • The county will also establish a guaranteed stream of funds to continue thereafter for ongoing repair and maintenance of the court’s facilities.

Trace the Money: Funding would come from a 40-year, quarter-percent countywide sales tax extension that was narrowly passed 6-5 by Cuyahoga County Council members in December 2023.

  • That sales tax also would pay for building the county’s new $889 million Central Services Campus corrections center in Garfield Heights.

The Drama: County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley alleged last month that allowing work on the new jail is illegal under Ohio law because county officials failed to form the committees required to review and approve the project plans.

Packing Up: The Justice Center also hosts the soon-to-be-vacated Cleveland Division of Police headquarters.

  • As a city-funded $90 million project, the department is moving into the renovated Artcraft Building on Superior Avenue at the east edge of Downtown.

Cavs go up 2-0 over the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.

Sports | By Dennis Manoloff

The Cavaliers beat the Toronto Raptors 115-105 Monday night in Cleveland. The Cavs now lead 2-0 in the best of seven series. Here are three quick takeaways from the game.

  • The Cavs proved they were the better team with another dominant performance at home.

  • Point guard James Harden and guard Donovan Mitchell remain the team's leaders, but forward Evan Mobley gives Cleveland a case for a big three. If Mobley continues to play like this, the Cavs are tough to beat.

  • While the Cavs have handled the Raptors so far, Toronto still has some fight left in them, especially if Immanuel Quickley returns to the lineup for Game Three.

From the Editor

After watching 24 games so far this season, the Cleveland Guardians need to upgrade their bullpen and fast. I don't think they can ride it out until the trade deadline.

They should have swept the series against Baltimore. I think the hitting is there, along with the starting pitching. Probably could be another starter to the rotation, but I think that is the least of the Guards' priorities. It needs to be bullpen help, a designated hitter and then another starter.

Thankfully, the Cavs look strong heading into Game Three.
