Brothers Michael and Tim Schoen opened the doors today to Eugene Tavern at 44 N. Main St. in Chagrin Falls. The restaurant is located in the space that had long been home to Flip Side Burgers, which closed in 2024. The operators spent about three months converting the interior into a casual and inviting space.
“This will be a place where you and your wife or girlfriend can come on a date for a nice three-course meal with homemade desserts, or you can come in alone, sit at the bar and enjoy a burger and a beer,” says Michael.
There is seating for approximately 65 guests, including the 12-seat bar.
Michael made a name for himself with the Tinman burger at the Ohio City Galley. Diners will find that famous smash burger on the menu in two iterations – a single and a double – but it is joined by a half-pound steak burger for those who prefer something meatier.
“The neighborhood needs a burger place since Flip Side closed,” adds Schoen.
In the starter department are items such as a soft pretzel served with Jarlsberg cheese spread, shrimp toast, and buttermilk fried chicken tenders with hot honey drizzle. French fries go through a meticulous three-fry process. They arrive in the form of tavern fries, tossed with herbs and parmesan cheese and served with malt vinegar aioli. They also accompany a steak frites starring grilled bavette and fish and chips made with Icelandic cod. Other entrees include a grilled Ohio pork chop with peach and sarsaparilla BBQ and a grilled cabbage steak with green goddess dressing.
The sandwich category includes a fried hot chicken sandwich, beet and pistachio burger, and a griddle-cooked PB&J with layers of pistachio butter, fig and cherry jams and Manchego cheese.
Eugene Tavern will be open for dinner and weekend lunch, with weekday lunches to be added a little down the road.
Also in the works for the Schoen brothers is a new barbecue concept that will go into the former R&D Sausage property in North Collinwood. Barbecue Gene is expected to open sometime in 2027. Diners can look forward to Montreal-style smoked meat, rotisserie chicken, housemade sausages, sides, cornbread, rolls and other smokehouse classics.
