Michael Deemer

CEO, Downtown Cleveland

Education: Juris doctor, The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law; master’s degree, University of Notre Dame; bachelor’s degree, Ohio University

What I Look for in a Leader: I’m drawn to leaders who combine idealism and pragmatism. They know what they stand for, but they also understand timing, relationships and execution.

Favorite Quote: One of my favorite exchanges is from the book, A Prayer for the City. After a meeting, David Cohen, Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell’s chief of staff, says, “That was interesting. And totally useless.” Rendell replies, “Like most meetings.” Cohen answers, “No, most meetings aren’t interesting.”

What Motivates Me Right Now: My 12-year-old daughter motivates me. I believe the decisions we make now about Downtown Cleveland will shape this city for a generation or more.

An Important Lesson I Learned: I’ve learned that alignment isn’t bureaucracy; it’s what makes efficient execution possible. In city-building work, taking the time upfront to get people clear on goals, roles and the action plan saves time, money and frustration later.

If I Could Star in a TV Show or Movie: The X-Files. In an era of conspiracy theories, it feels strangely current.
