If you think you know the extent of Ohio’s Amish Country, you’re probably missing a city — maybe even a whole county. What you consider Amish Country could depend on a variety of factors: where you grew up, who you ask or what website you’re looking at.

Most sources agree that Ohio Amish Country’s densest populations span four counties. Two of them are clustered near central Ohio, and two are in Northeast Ohio.

There’s Middlefield in Geauga County, Trumbull County near Youngstown, and Tuscarawas and Holmes counties, which account for two of Ohio Amish Country's most popular hubs: Sugarcreek and Millersburg. Holmes County is the world’s second-largest Amish community, exceeded only by Lancaster County in Pennsylvania, one of the earliest Amish settlement spots in America.

All this to say, Ohio Amish Country is really big, and it would be impossible for someone to reasonably hit each of its regions in a short trip.

So, we’ve tailored a streamlined guide to Holmes and Tuscarawas counties exclusively, neighboring areas located about an hour and a half south of Cleveland. Our picks primarily fall within a 10- to 20-mile (or 10- to 30-minute) drive of each other, highlighting some smaller areas that are maybe not worth their own trip, but worth a stop while you’re in the area.
