Q: What advice do you have for students who are undecided on a major?

A: “The most important thing students can do is not feel pressured to choose a major during their first year,” says Bryan DePoy, vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer at Lake Erie College. “That first year should really be devoted toward exploration. The great news is that even if a student doesn’t quite get it right the first time, that’s not the end of the world. Students often change majors two to three or perhaps even more times throughout their academic career, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I do think that they could have a much more efficient college education if they start to integrate their experiences with the career development office as well as the faculty with whom they will work.”
