Q: What are some common pitfalls that stand in the way of a successful college transition and how do you help students overcome them?

A: “One challenge I see students facing in their first year of college is just not being aware of all the resources that colleges offer,” says Megan Claycomb, a recruitment specialist at Cuyahoga Community College. “So if you’re struggling in a class, there is free tutoring so you don’t drop that class and risk losing your financial aid. If you are still undecided after your first semester, there’s career counseling, so you don’t feel like you need to stop taking classes to figure it out. I tell students not to be afraid to ask questions, get to know their faculty and staff, and get involved in organizations. Because having a network can make a huge college feel a little bit smaller, a little more like home.”
