Clevelanders have a handle on how to brew (and drink) beer. So if you need a palate cleanser from India pale ales, stouts and porters, head over to Duck Island’s Western Reserve Meadery. Owners Douglas Shaw and Jason Andro will give you a crash course in the fermented honey drink that’s popular across the pond. “Lots of people trying it for the first time are surprised it’s not super sweet and how light some of it is,” says Shaw. In the casual tasting room, with just a few stools in the front of a production facility, you’ll quickly turn into a fellow mead head as you try samples ($2 each) or 5-ounce pours ($5) of some of their best hits. Our faves include Buckwheat Blossom Orange Peel with its fresh orange scent, the sparkling Hefe-Mel that has a slight banana flavor, and the robust, ruby-red Buckwheat Blossom Honey Cherry, which offers dark chocolate, cherry and vanilla notes. “Some are full-bodied, but many are light and refreshing.” 2135 Columbus Road, Suite C, Cleveland, 216-716-2500, westernreservemeadery.com
