Bruce Springsteen protests and plays the hits in Cleveland.

Music | By Dillon Stewart

Bruce Springsteen brought his high-energy “Land of Hopes and Dreams” tour of decade-spanning hits to Cleveland on Friday night, marking at least his 40th appearance in Northeast Ohio.

Local Lore: Cleveland holds a special place in his heart. Once a star of WMMS radio, the heartland rocker’s local airplay led to his iconic 1978 concert at the Agora.

NEO Love: Springsteen referenced the area's impact on his music, both indirectly in his performance of “Youngstown,” and directly, speaking to the crowd near the end of the night.

  • Springsteen: “Thank you for supporting our band all these years. I think back to the old Agora. I was in my 20s. What I want to say is: Cleveland, thanks for a lifetime.”

E Street Addition: Tom Morello, guitarist and founding member of Rage Against the Machine, brought an extra spark to Springsteen's already-powerful E Street Band.

Marshall Fredericks’ Fountain of Eternal Life in Cleveland

In 1964, Marshall Fredericks’ Fountain of Eternal Life in Cleveland was dedicated.

History | By Vince Guerrieri

In the days leading up to Memorial Day 1964, a project 19 years in the making was getting its finishing touches.

World War II had ended in Europe but was still raging in the South Pacific when the Cleveland Press first floated the idea of a memorial fountain on the Mall in May 1945. The memorial would be sculpted by Marshall Fredericks, a Rock Island, Illinois, native who grew up in Cleveland and attended the Cleveland School of Art. The announcement was made that fall, shortly after Fredericks had returned home from his own service in the Pacific as a lieutenant colonel in the 20th Bomber Group.

Fredericks was noted at that point for the Barbour Memorial Fountain at Belle Isle Park in Detroit, and would later sculpt the Spirit of Detroit at its City-County Building, as well as a statue for the 1964 World’s Fair in Queens.

Read more about why it took 19 years to get the memorial fountain up.

Cavs lose to the Knicks in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Down 0-3 in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Cavs couldn't revive the series, losing 130-93 to the Knicks.

The Cavs left much to be desired on the court as the Knicks swept the conference series in Cleveland. Here are three takeaways:

  • An Inevitable Loss: The Knicks quickly caught their stride and took control at Rocket Arena for Game 4, showing better defense, balance and coaching than the Cavs.

  • The Better Team: With little momentum from three previous games with significant scoring deficits, including the 22-point lead lost in Game 1,  the odds of the Cavs making a series comeback seemed unlikely. The team's inconsistent performance throughout the series puts Kenny Atkinson's coaching future into question.

  • Bidding Farewell: Longtime Cavs announcer Jim Chones called his last game tonight as the team's season came to an end. Though not a victorious conclusion, Chones will still be remembered as one of the franchise's great broadcasters.

Friday's Trivia Answer

A young Tom Hanks came to Cleveland in the late 1970s to work with what acting troupe? Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival (now the Great Lakes Theater)

Check back tomorrow for the answer to today's question.

From the Editor

I love the Tom Hanks trivia question. Cleveland and Ohio have such cool history nuggets when you look at them in terms of a national or worldwide scale.

Some of my favorites that we covered are Cleveland's ties to the atomic bomb, the Grateful Dead's ties to Northeast Ohio and how the city played a role in Amelia Earhart's final flight. - Jaden Stambolia, Editorial Assistant
