Chef Vinnie Cimino's wait for a James Beard Award continues.

Food & Drink | By Dillon Stewart

Vinnie Cimino, chef-partner of Cordelia and Rosy, isn’t coming home with a medal in his second trip to Chicago as a finalist in the James Beard Awards.

  • Chi-Town Winner:  The award for Best Chef: Great Lakes went to Jacob Potashnick of Feld in Chicago.

In 2024, Cimino became Cleveland’s first James Beard Award finalist since 2015, when Jonathon Sawyer took home the award for Greenhouse Tavern.

  • Notably: It took Symon three times to win the award. Sawyer also didn’t win the award on his first or second try — or even his third, finally nabbing it the fourth time.

PGA golf returns to Firestone for a final time.

Sports | By Dillon Stewart

The Kaulig Companies Championship is set to return to Firestone Country Club in Akron on July 9. Members of the media received a preview Monday of the forthcoming event.

While the full roster isn't full yet, highlights from the field include:

  • Ernie Els, the 2024 champion;

  • Retief Goosen, the 2019 champion;

  • Bernhard Langer, the all-time Champions Tour win leader; and

  • Vijay Singh, the 2018 winner and winner of the 2008 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone.

A Major Award: John Daly will receive the 2026 Ambassador of Golf award, which benefits the Northern Ohio Golf Charities Foundation.

  • Bogey: In May, the PGA Tour announced that it would move the Senior Players Championship to Newport Beach, California, in 2027, ending the PGA's 73-year run in Akron.

But the Kaulig Companies Championship is going out in style, with a comedy show — featuring Bill Squire, Mary Santora, Mike Polk Jr. and more — and musical performances from headliner Bailey Zimmerman on July 10 and Red Wanting Blue, The Trews and A Band Named Ashes on July 11. Food trucks and other entertainment complete the family friendly experience.

Talk of the Town

Cleveland Guardians star third baseman Jose Ramirez fractured his hamate bone in his left hand on Saturday. Ramirez is now on the 10-day injured list, with Gabriel Arias being reactivated after an injury that has kept him out since April. Arias' activation is to help the infield.

Possible impending free agent Jame Harden was arrested Saturday for allegedly carrying a gun unlawfully. Harden was arrested in Houston, where he spent nine years of his career. In February, the Cleveland Cavaliers traded Darius Garland to the Los Angeles Clippers for Harden, who has one year left on a player option. Harden has until June 29 to accept or deny the option, which would pay him around $42.32 million.

A report says Cleveland is one of the safer metro areas in the United States for walking. The analysis from Smart Growth America says Cleveland had the 13th-lowest pedestrian fatality rate at 1.12 per 100,000 residents.

After cutting faculty positions and undergraduate programs, Baldwin Wallace University is in talks with Cleveland State University about a possible partnership for some programs, according to Signal Cleveland. Baldwin Wallace's new president, Lee Fisher, denied that the talks link to a possible merger.

From the Editor

They call the James Beard Awards the Oscars of chefs, and like the Hollywood event, there were platefuls of talented chefs in that theater in Chicago who did not win the big award. Cordelia chef Vinnie Cimino, who is one of them, will undoubtedly return to Chicago for another chance at the medal. Maybe next time, Rosy, his new restaurant in Hingetown, will push him over the edge. Until then, he'll continue to be another reason to love Cleveland and a standard-bearer of our food scene.  -Dillon Stewart, Editor
