Park City, Utah

Put your athletic ability to the test.

Aug. 22, 2014 | 4:00 AM

A mountain town just 35 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport, Park City boasts extreme fall fun and renowned winter sports. Parking at the top of Main Street in downtown provides easy access to a variety of hiking trails — within 10 minutes you'll spot nothing but mountains. Athletic intensity increases at Utah Olympic Park, one of only two winter Olympic parks in the country open for visitors to use. Here bobsleds don skateboardlike wheels during nonwinter months, hurtling riders up to 80 mph down the nearly 1-mile track. Rent a bike from Deer Valley Resort, where professional mountain biking events take place. Board a lift to the mountaintop, then take the gradual slope down, challenging yourself through rocky and wooded terrain or wide, smooth runs. Afterward you'll want to soothe aching muscles at High West Distillery's saloon with a pour of double rye before checking in at the Waldorf Astoria. Fall offers offseason rates, so this is the time to indulge in a luxury mountainside suite.
