Small plates are big in Cleveland, with a handful of restaurants now known for their smaller, shareable bites, such as Lakewood’s Salt and Tremont’s Trio. The idea behind offering creative, affordable dishes meant to be enjoyed a la carte has made its way to the Old Brooklyn neighborhood, where owner Tony Mellon opened Opal on Pearl in the former Drink Bar & Grill space in July 2018.

Though you won’t find as many small plates options as you may at Trio or an ever-changing, seasonal menu such as Salt’s, there’s still plenty of reasons to give Opal a try.

The stuffed dates ($9) are full of flavor thanks to a combination of chorizo, bacon and a spiced honey that provides just the right amount of kick. The mussels ($11), laden in a white wine sauce with oven-roasted tomatoes, garlic, herbs and a compound butter, proves you don’t need to mess with a classic.

And while the charred Brussel sprouts ($5.50) are technically a side dish, it’s one worth ordering among the rest of your meal. Served with a creamy, smoky pancetta aioli, it’s a dish you’ll want to share (but secretly keep all to yourself).

But it isn’t just about petite portions here. Don’t overlook the specials, where Mellon offers heftier options such as a recent pan-roasted cod served with a crab twice-baked potato.

Whatever size you choose, you’re sure to find the right fit for your appetite.
