Sugar Rush (1)

Using natural ingredients, two cousins put a spin on cotton candy.

It seems every kind of treat — from cupcakes to doughnuts and even popsicles — is getting a makeover. So when cousins Hillary Lias and Gretchen Kollin started daydreaming about what nostalgic sweets they'd love to reinvent, they settled on the fair staple: cotton candy. "We wanted to take a new approach," says Lias, "not just doing it in a more natural way, but in cool flavors." They whipped up Spun Sugars in 2010 and today make about 20 variations using organic and natural ingredients that are great for birthday parties and weddings. You can also catch them at festivals and fairs throughout Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Get a taste Aug. 23 at Solon's St. Rita Parish festival. Here are our favorite kinds.
