Jay Crawford's Backyard Shed Gives Us DIY Vibes
The 3 News anchor uses the shed to store his tools and honor his wife's family history.

When 3 News anchor Jay Crawford shared a photo of his newly built backyard shed on Twitter, we admittedly got a little jealous. The former ESPN SportsCenter anchor customized the Amish-built base structure, using the same paint colors and stone found on his recently built Craftsman/Shaker-style home. Inspired by this he-shed, which Crawford uses to store tools and lawn equipment, we asked him to break down its custom work, that Cleveland Indians flag and more.
Q: Why did you decide to customize the shed?
A: I knew I wanted one for my backyard. And I didn’t want just the standard, regular shed. I wanted to go the extra mile. The style of it reminded me a little bit of our house. Me and my wife never tried to do anything like that before, but we thought it would be a fun project. It’s a conversation piece: Everybody that comes over wants to know, “What’s up with the shed? It looks nice enough to be someone’s house,” and I say, “Well, that was the whole intention.”
Q: What other elements did you add to it?
A: I wanted to actually have finished walls on the inside. For that, my wife’s great grandparents in 1903 built a home on 50 acres down in southern Ohio. There was a treasure trove of tongue-and-groove wood lining all the walls of this beautifully built home. My father-in-law and I pulled as much of that wood out of the home as we could. I used that to line the interior walls of the shed. I’d like to think that [my wife’s great-grandfather] would be happy to know that the wood he put so much love and care into, that lined the home that he built for his family, is still being used over a century later for his great-granddaughter.
Q: Why go with the Tribe flag?
A: If I had to pick one team that I could watch the rest of my life, it would be the Indians. I bought two different ones, and I change them out for whatever reason. I have another one, a brand new one that I’m going to fly as soon as baseball season starts. Baseball’s my first love —always has been.
