Local Artists Want You To Donate To WJCU's Radiothon

We compiled a list of our four favorite plea videos from local artists such as Michael McFarland, Shy Moon, Niights and Apostle Jones.

You can flip to any channel on your radio dial and hear Ariana Grande, Future or Luke Bryan. But WJCU 88.7 FM, John Carroll University's 50-year-old, student-run, non-commercial radio station, is one of the only spots to hear daily alternative sounds on the The Heights, coverage of John Carroll football and discussions of local issues on shows such as The Outspoken Cyclist. Every Monday night from 8-10 p.m., NEORocks hosts Jason Meyers and Eric Simna spin an eclectic mix of the best tracks Northeast Ohio musicians have to offer — music that proves Cleveland still rocks.

Once a year, however, these champions of local music get a little support from the fans and musicians they serve. That week is called Radiothon!, and local artists join the cause by tapping into their fan base to help raise money. This year, the station is attempting to raise $50,000 for its 50th anniversary, with $4,000 coming from the NEORocks community. The fundraiser, which is only a few hundred dollars away from it's goal, started Feb. 8 and runs through Feb. 17. As such, this the last chance for listeners to donate.

On top of choice incentives, such as the WJCU car magnet or bottle opener donors receive with a $25 donation and the gift cards and t-shirts that come with larger ones, we thought these creative pleas from local musicians made the case for supporting WJCU and NEORocks. Here are a few of our favorites.

We can't deny the accuracy of this highly scientific chart from Niights frontwoman-turned-mad-scientist Jenna Fournier.

In this retro-reminiscent, black-and-white silent film, Shy Moon singer Cassie Bishop overcomes sadness when she realizes she can share her music for free on NEORocks — and asks for your support.

Musician and multimedia artist Michael McFarland knows the key to a great viral video — cats.

Mikey Silas brings the soulful rhymes he delivers as lead singer and keyboardist of the rockin' R&B band Apostle Jones to his plea video.
